The 7th edition of Roma Glocal Brightness will be held in Rome from 16 to 18 December 2022, the Lightmotiv will be “Nascita” (“Birth”).
The last two editions were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but this year we are back with the Call for Artists. In designing their artistic proposals, participants will have to be guided by the concept of “Birth”.
The impulse comes from the latest book by the philosopher Emanuele Coccia, Metamorphoses. An important reflection on birth both as a concept and as a fact, a point of union between all living species that are travelling on our planet and, at the same time, are part of a universal system where “everything is one and one is everything”.
We overlook the fact that we all breathe the same gas mixture, the air I am breathing right now will be the air that the fly circling around me will soon breathe.
Birth is the first of our experiences.
Birth is the state of possibility.
Birth is a channel of transformation.
We are always born in a body other than ours.
Birth as a metamorphosis of something else.
Nobody remembers their own birth.
If we are born it is because each one of us is a part of the world.
All living beings are the same body, the same life and the same self that continues to pass from form to form, from subject to subject, from existence to existence.
We are all a particle, a sliver of light.
We are forced to become different.
The birth itself is the first lottery won.
Submit your artistic proposal no later than 12:00 (+1 GMT) on September 4, 2022.
The 7th edition of the festival will be held in Rome, in the urban context that best represents the future of our society; a cosmopolitan place made of a coexistence between people and mixture of different realities, where colors and customs are twisted, influencing each other and unconsciously creating a new world. This is the triangle of land that has its vertices in the pedestrian area of Pigneto, the Alessandrino Aqueduct of Parco Sangalli and Piazza Malatesta; a route of about 4 kilometers that runs along the historic streets, architecture, and landscapes of the neighborhood.
The artistic installations of Roma Glocal Brightness will create a strong union with the environment that hosts them; the work will become part of the neighborhood and the neighborhood will participate in the artwork, exalting one other in an exchange that tends to fusion. Your project proposal can therefore be designed for outdoor locations or semi-enclosed spaces positioned along the path of the festival. Streets and alleys, squares and gardens, galleries, buildings, facades and courtyards.
Let yourself be inspired and stimulated by the places for the creation of your artwork!
*The map highlights the locations that are considered as the most interesting by the Artistic Direction. However, the artistic proposals can be designed to be set up in any other location along the pre-established route.
Light Art, Light Design, Ambient Light, Architectural Lighting, Urban Light, Video Installations and Videomapping installations. “Urbe Light” explores the relationship between art and the urban environment; the section is dedicated to the artworks that will be installed along the route of the Festival.
Light Painting, Performance of Light Art and Light Show (indoors or outdoors). “Light Performance” is the section dedicated to performances, where the dramaturgical aspect predominates over the lighting effect.
3D Realtà Virtuale
The artistic proposals for the Aurora Arena will concern the world of 3D: 3D projections on screen (visible with passive glasses), Virtual Reality (visible with VR viewer), 3D installations (visible to the naked eye), 3D Analog Projectors (visible to the naked eye).

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION
As for the past edition, there are no special requirements for participation, apart from the desire to get involved, apply and experiment.
The call is targeting artists, individuals or groups, of all ages and nationalities.
It is possible to participate in the selection by presenting one or more projects (an application must be completed for each proposal).
Light must be the main form of expression of the design proposals: light art, light installations, light objects, light environments, light design, architectural lighting, urban light, video installations, video mapping, live performances, light shows, 3D projections and installations.
It is preferable to propose an unpublished artwork. Already completed projects may be presented only if they have never been exhibited in Rome.
The work proposed for the “Urbe Light” section must be site-specific, made specifically for a place located along the route of the festival or in the immediately surrounding areas.
The proposals concerning the “Light Performance” section should indicate a possible location.
If need be, the Artistic Direction reserves the right to relocate the artworks in order to maintain a functional structural organicity to the Festival, clearly respecting the preferences indicated by the artist.
The festival will pay the production costs of the artwork (up to a maximum gross amount of €3,000.00) and the costs of travel, food and accommodation for the artist.
Crucial elements for the selection will be:
- The relevance of the artistic proposal to the theme “Birth”
- The quality of the artwork, in technical and artistic terms
- The socio-cultural value of the artwork, in relation to the territory that will host it
- Economic feasibility
- For the “Urbe Light” section, the site-specific character of the proposed artwork
The selection will be at the discretion of the Artistic Direction. The results of the Call for Artists will be posted on the official website of the festival (www.rgblightfest.com) on September 20, 2022.
